How We Test
Our goal is simple: translate your body geometry and expected load into a pack that carries comfortably over real terrain. To do that, we run standardized, repeatable tests across diverse bodies and known trail loops—then publish clear fit ranges, stability notes, and longevity factors.
Testers and Carry Profiles
- Body‑diverse pool spanning torso lengths and hip shapes, including women/petite/plus/long‑torso testers.
- Carry profiles capture: torso length, hip wrap, waist/hip circumference, footwear, pack weight (wet/dry), water/food needs, climate, and special loads (bear can, camera/tripod, kid gear).
- We size belts/frames per manufacturer guidance, then micro‑adjust to remove hotspots and nerve pinch.
Load Classes and Loops
- Daypack: 10–20 lb on mixed trail with short scrambles and quick descents.
- Weekend/3‑day: 28–35 lb with side‑hill traverses, rocky steps, and extended descents.
- Expedition/water carry: 45–55 lb and high‑torso stress segments; includes heat/humidity and alpine loops. Each pack is run through at least two loops with the target load range it claims to handle; if a brand states a higher limit, we validate or flag mismatches.
Core Measurements We Publish
- Fit range: torso and belt sizes that achieved neutral spine, full hip transfer, and strap angle alignment.
- Stability index: how well the pack tracks with the body during scrambles, side‑hills, and switchback descents.
- Load sweet spot: the weight where the pack feels planted and comfortable for hours.
- Access & organization: bottle reach with 1L, pocket volumes, bear can orientation, trekking pole/tripod carry.
- Ventilation vs. stability trade‑off: we record heat buildup vs. lateral sway for suspended vs. close‑back designs.
- True usable volume: compression behavior and roll‑top variability across loads.
Durability & Longevity Checks
- Fabric abrasion passes against coarse surfaces; we log scuffs and fiber pull after set distances.
- Seam and bar‑tack inspection at stress points (belt wings, shoulder yoke, load lifters, daisy chains).
- Frame/hardware integrity over repeated loads and temperatures.
- Repairability: ease of replacing belts/straps/buckles, zipper serviceability, parts availability, and tool list.
- Modularity and upgrade paths to extend service life (belt swaps, stays, accessory pockets).
Scoring & Transparency
- We weight comfort and stability most heavily, then durability/repairability, then access and organization.
- Notes include who the pack fits well (and who it doesn’t), with photos representing multiple body types.
- Long‑term logs: we revisit high‑mileage packs seasonally to update wear and repair outcomes.
- No pay‑to‑play: brands cannot buy higher scores or prior review; affiliate revenue never dictates outcomes.
